Ashton will wing it in new role
Nathan Ashton

NEW signing Nathan Ashton has played for England at every level from U16 to U20 but he has never been asked to do what Peter Taylor is asking him to do at Wycombe.

Ashton has played in the Premiership as left back, answered his country's call as a left back but Taylor has now got him ear-marked for an attacking left wing role.

And the 21-year-old admits he was shocked when Taylor revealed his plan to him.

He said: "It was a real surprise. I have never played there before. I have played all my career as a left back but the gaffer says he has brought me here as a left winger."

A few fans might have been doubting Taylor's conversion plan when, against Oxford United, Ashton sliced a left foot cross straight out of play behind the goal and then showed his frustration by booting the advertising board.

Ashton said: "That was a bit embarrassing. I got frustrated because I know I can do much better than that. We had a good opportunity to score and I was so disappointed with myself. I tried to concentrate too much and be too precise."

But last week, when he came off the bench against League One Southend, he showed that he can be a real handful in the attacking third as well as a more than competent defender.

He said: "Peter Taylor wants me as a winger and I know I can do the job. With my pace I like to be direct and I like to comne in off the line and play and create things in the final third.

"I am confident I can do it. I have always liked to get forward and I feel I can be comfortable there.

"It is a new position for me at a new club and I can't wait to make it a success."

And he has double reason to want to make a real go of his new position.

He said: "I've got 37 caps from U16s to U20s and I want more.

"I know I have dropped down the divisions and I have now got a new position but if I am consistent I don't see why I can't get into the U21 side and win some more caps.

"I have taken a bit of a gamble coming down to this level but to get the chance to work with Peter Taylor is a great opportunity and I want to get a run of games going and be consistent.

"All I can do is perform and then you never know who is watching. I don't see why a League Two player can't play for the England U21s but promotion is my top priority this year."
